"Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary"

  Mission Statement

"Banners for Peace" is a volunteer-based, community out-reach arts initiative. By inviting Bay Area schools, non-profits, and community based organizations to participate in creating billboard size messages for peace, the "Banners for Peace" project will provide educational and socially conscious experiences for all involved.

Vision

The "Banners for Peace" campaign goal is to create forty (40) billboard size messages of peace before January 1st, 2007. Each banner will emanate with love, positivism, and vibrant colors in an offering of spiritual reawakening.

The aim of this project is to create a ripple of inspiration; each banner acting as invitation to step back and ponder the influence of mass-marketing-media and how we've become lost in the hurry-up consumerist lifestyle of this 21st century.

By using messages that inspire self-reflection, and invite peaceful reaffirmation, the "Banners for Peace" campaign hopes to spark the collective evolution of a more compassionate, self-aware, and loving species of man.

The intention of this project is not only to create magnificently uplifting works of art, but do so with the participation of the diverse communities of the Bay Area. Banners will be created by groups of participants (10-40 people) from a variety of schools, community groups, and non-profit organizations around greater San Francisco.

Contributions to each banner, including artistic layout and lettering design will come from the collaboration of groups, as well as from artists and creative facilitators, in support of the Creative Process being offered.

Once the first ten banners are created, an outdoor exposition in the city of San Francisco will occur. The production schedule and creative explosion will continue until the stated forty banners have been completed. Fundraising for the creation, documentation, production, and display of these banners is currently underway. For financial contributions, or supply donations please Contact Ross Holzman.

The "Banners for Peace" campaign is dedicated to seeing these giant messages of peace displayed from actual billboards around San Francisco and across the World.

Creative Process

Step 1 - Design Workshop
In an hour and half (90 minute) workshop participating groups, guided by facilitators, will visualize, develop and design the layout for their banner. In this time groups will select the slogan they feel most inspired to create and plot the layout for the banner decoration.

Steps 2 & 3 - Painting Days
The Design Workshop will be followed by two 4-8 hour painting days in which participants will contribute to the creation of the banner. Each canvas will be decorated and painted to reflect the participating group's vision for the chosen slogan.
